The panic narrative says BPM developers are the ones agentic AI replaces. We think the opposite is true: they hold the scarcest skill in the whole transition. Thousands of engineers can prompt an LLM. Vanishingly few know how enterprises actually run processes — state that survives restarts, compensation when step four fails after step three committed, SLAs with regulatory teeth, audits that ask questions years later. Agentic automation doesn't make that knowledge obsolete. It makes it the bottleneck.
What transfers directly
- Process decomposition → workflow design. Breaking messy business reality into steps, decisions, exceptions and escalations is exactly what agentic workflow design needs — the notation changed, the thinking didn't.
- Rules discipline → tool contracts and guardrails. ODM people already think in explicit inputs, deterministic outcomes and governed versions. That's precisely the discipline agent tools and autonomy limits require.
- Operational instinct → agent operations. Whoever has debugged a stuck BPM instance at 2 a.m. understands why agent observability, retries and dead-letter thinking matter before the first incident, not after.
- Integration fluency → the tool layer. Knowing where the data lives and which system owns which truth is what makes an agent useful instead of eloquent.
What's genuinely new
Three things, honestly named. Instructions are artifacts now — prompts and agent definitions need versioning, review and testing like code, because they are code. Evaluation replaces certainty — deterministic tests still cover the tools, but agent behavior needs eval suites, sampled review and production monitoring; "it passed once" means little. Non-determinism is a design material — the skill isn't eliminating it, it's deciding where it's acceptable and fencing it where it isn't. None of this is harder than what BPM engineers already mastered. It's just different — and it's learnable in months, not years.
How the bridge works in practice
We pair people, not replace them: every agentic engagement staffs classic-stack engineers alongside agent-native ones, on the same delivery. The BAW veteran learns the ADK on a real project; the agent engineer learns why the compensation logic exists. After two engagements the distinction starts to dissolve — which is the point. That, plus a certification path aligned with IBM's watsonx Orchestrate motion, is the whole program. No bootcamp theater.
